Basic components of the piping system

Piping components: components used to connect or assemble pipelines, including pipes, fittings, flanges, gaskets, fasteners, valves, expansion joints, flexible joints, pressure hoses, steam traps, filters and separators.

Pipe support: a generic term for pipe mountings and attachments used to transfer loads from pipes or pipe attachments to supporting structures or equipment, such as hangers, spring supports and hangers, diagonal rods, support rods, saddles, pads, brackets, sliding supports, etc.

Piping System Design and Considerations

Determination of pipe diameter: When the flow rate of the fluid is known, the size of the pipe diameter depends on the allowable flow rate or allowable frictional resistance (pressure drop). When the flow rate is high, the pipe diameter is small, but the pressure drop increases. Therefore, the pipe diameter shall be determined based on the comprehensive consideration of construction investment, operation cost and other technical factors.

Connection of pipes: the connection methods of pipes, pipe connectors, valves and inlet and outlet connecting pipes on equipment are determined by the nature, pressure and temperature of the fluid, as well as the material, size and installation site of the pipes, mainly including threaded connection, flange connection, socket connection and welding.

Piping Material Selection: The material used for pipe fabrication must be selected to suit the operating conditions of the piping system. Guidelines for selecting the correct materials can be obtained from standard piping specifications to ensure that the materials used are completely safe under the expected operating conditions of pressure, temperature, corrosion, and erosion.

Standardization of Pipe Sizes: Commercial pipes are made in standard sizes, each with several different wall thicknesses or weights. Sizes are expressed as nominal (approximate) inside diameter or actual outside diameter, and all classes of pipe have the same outside diameter with different weights of extra thickness on the inside.
